Marijuana – a tribute blog!

Marijuana is the common name for a few plants in the cannabis genus including sativa, indica, and ruderalis used for its psychoactive properties around the world. Marijuana has also been traditionally used to treat inflammatory disorders. Today, marijuana is used as an adjuvant cancer therapy, meaning it is used alongside other drugs that treat cancer. Medical marijuana use can alleviate pain and increase appetite. It is also being investigated for its effect on inflammation and chronic disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. I decided to do a bit of digging myself into the history of Marijuana.

Around 34 million years BC, in the mountains of Kazakhstan, the cannabis plant evolved from humulus lupulus, or more commonly known as, the hops plant, the flower of which is still used to this day today in brewing process of beer. Evolving at such high elevation, presented the plant with many unique environmental pressures. To better survive in this harsh climate cannabinoids such as THC were used to retain water and reflect sunlight.

Tertahydricannaboniol, or THC, is the most famous cannabinoid, discovered by Doctor Raphael Mechoulam, in the 1960s, the naturally-occurring chemical compound, THC, found in the cannabis plant has a different chemical makeup, that fits our (Human) CB1 and CB2 receptor sites perfectly, magnifying the mood-enhancing effects, therapeutic response,  physiological impact and stimulating emotional responses.

8000 years BC, the plant has gone through many changes in the evolution process and around the same time civilization begins stepping in agriculture, the oldest known use for the plant is for hemp and its fibers.

In 1977, Carl Sagan, stated that, Marijuana may actually have been the world’s first agricultural crop, leading to the development of human civilization itself.

5000 years BC, India starts using the resin from the plant as a medicine. The news round ancient Asia. Records from 2737 BC, indicate that Emperor Jang Ying of China prescribed marijuana tea, for the treatment of malaria , rheumatism, gout, to help with the sharpening of memory, increased eloquence, and the stimulation of appetite. The plants popularity now spreads to the Middle East, and the Eastern Coast of Africa. Ancient physicians start prescribing marijuana for everything from pain relief, to earaches, to childbirth. Through the world cannabis becomes a wonder treatment for hundred of ailments and disorders.

Egyptian hieroglyphs discovered the Pyramids dating back to 1550 BC, indicate that ancient Egyptians were very aware of the medical benefits of cannabis, and in some ways maybe even surpassing our modern knowledge about the plant.

Fast forward on AD, the Roman begins trading and distributing hemp around the world. The power of the Roman Empire made the plant commonplace accorss the globe. 400 AD, Hemp is cultivated in Europe to replace the Roman imports as the Romain empire is failing.

Hemp is now used around the world for various uses.

1533 England, King Henry the 8th puts forward a Royal Proclamation that farmers must pust aside land for the growth of Hemp. 1753, Swedish botantis, Carlos Linnaeus, names the plant cannabis sativa.

The entire world sees a significant advancement in industry, technology and communications. Some of the best know scientists, philosophers, thinkers and personalties of the last two centuries have been know to use this amazing plant to heal, ponder and grow…

From William Shakespeare, Queen Victoria of the Birtish Empire, James Monroe, William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, Ottomon Sultan Abdülaziz I of the Ottomon Empire, Francis Crick, Carl Sagan to John F. Kennedy… the list goes on… Catch my drift?

Fast forward to the Nixon Era! Everything falls to shit!!!! Literally Everything FALLS TO SHIT!!! With their on agenda for the Vietnam War, the Nixon Administration prohibits to drug due it wide spread use among hippies and other minorities in the USA… Going on to produce propaganda films such as Reefer Madness.

Sadly, the world follows suit… Marijuana becomes a Class A drug! WAIT WHAT? We are trying to criminalise a plant that is as old as this planet? In a span of less than a 100 years the human civilisation may have set back progress and development by 1000-1500 years.

Today, Marijuana is still a Class A drug in most countries around the world… but there is hope!

Public support for legalizing marijuana is increasing… Starting with Colorado and Washington in 2012, recreational marijuana, also known as adult-use marijuana, has been legalized by ten states and in the capital Washington DC in America. Fully Legal for Recreational use in Canada – Cannabis in Canada is legal for both recreational and medicinal purposes.

Uruguay fully legalised the consumption and sale of recreational cannabis nationwide. Court rulings in Georgia and South Africa have led to the legalisation of cannabis consumption.

And Spain and Netherlands have always been sovereign states where the sale of cannabis is tolerated at licensed establishments.

Countries that have legalized the medical use of cannabis include Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Norway, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Switzerland, and Thailand.

Ireland – In June 2018, after a bill was passed to legalise cannabis in Canada, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar of Ireland stated that the decriminalisation of cannabis was ‘under consideration’, with an expert group considering the examining the systems in jurisdictions in which cannabis has been decriminalised for recreational use.
